Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1028, employers must provide medical surveillance to all employees who are or may be exposed to benzene at or above the Action Level of 0.5 ppm as an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) for 30 or more days per year, or at or above the PEL (1.0 ppm TWA) for 10 or more days per year.
Because benzene metabolites are rapidly eliminated by the body, urine specimens must be collected immediately at the end of the work shift (or within 2 to 4 hours post-exposure) on the day of suspected exposure to ensure valid biological monitoring results.
